OVERVIEW
Known as the ‘Marsh Girl’ of Barkley Cove, Kya Clark had a difficult start to life when her mother left home when she was just a child. One by one, her brothers and sisters followed until only Kya and her father were left. Despite the rumours, Kya is actually intelligent and resilient, surviving on her own in the marsh for years.
As she develops into a young woman, she longs to be loved and through this desire, she becomes entangled with two young men from town. Then the unthinkable happens…

MY THOUGHTS
Where The Crawdads Sing is a heartbreakingly beautiful and suspenseful tale. The treatment and upbringing of Kya through her life pull at your heartstrings. My heart broke for her yet she shows such strength and resilience. She fights against prejudice, poverty and loneliness to become a clever and independent young woman.
Her transition to womanhood combined with her naivety from years of isolation result in a tragic event that made me cry more and more with each page I read. However, instead of letting it defeat her, she allows it to make her stronger, taking control of her life and honing her studies of the Marsh.
Her growing relationship with Tate, a boy that lives nearby, falls at the cusp of womanhood and is made more powerful because of it. The murder and trial keep you hooked and guessing right until the very end. This book was a great read!
